Benn woke up in the back-left corner of our cage in his favorite sleeping spot- an old PVC pipe that he had filled with cottonballs and old candy wrappers. I sat near the water bowl, where I was solving a puzzle that the whitecoats had set in. The puzzle was in a triangle shape, with 14 pegs lodged inside it, and my goal was to make it so that there was only one peg left. Benn quietly maneuvered his way across the cage, passing puzzles I had already solved, and stopping to look at my puzzle. He didn't say anything, which was the right thing to do since I was very much engrossed in the puzzle. Benn walked over to the food bowl, and I could tell that he noticed that I had not eaten yet, and picked up a dried up raisin.
"My dear Benn, please shut up." I growled at him. He jerked his head up and was about to speak when I spoke. "Come here and look at this puzzle. Does it confuse your simple mind?" He walked over and looked at the puzzle once again, handing me the raisin. I threw it behind me and stared at Benn.
"Well, can't you just move that peg over that one?" he replied, picking up the raisin and handing it back to me. I stared at the puzzle, and started to move the pegs. Left, right, up, left, left, right, down, and . . . done. "Good job. Don't forget to eat your breakfast." Benn said grinning. I ate the raisin quickly, and followed him to the food bowl, picking up a pellet.
Suddenly, the top of the cage opened up, and a hand located in the front-right corner set something down in the back-right corner, just opposite of where we sat. i stood up, and walked towards the new creature in the cage - nearly knocking over Benn's tower of bottle caps. "A new puzzle . . ." I murmered as Benn came up beside me.
