I haven’t even heard the reason yet
Everyone around me keeps asking me why I’m like this
Why are you like that, why are you like that? I’m already the bad guy
He dug his nails into the dry dirt, snarling at the ground. The dead grass stirred as he lashed his tail first one way, then the other.
It’s too late, you said you can’t come back
You’ve always believed that I’d crumble without you
That’s a misunderstanding, why would I do that? why, why, I told you I wouldn’t
He shook his head and plunged further into the weeds. He looked up; the great wire fences were looming closer and higher as he ran. Close, so, so close, just a few more bounds -
Max woke in his cage. His heart was still pounding from the excitement of being so close to freedom, yet he was still here, alone and imprisoned. The glass of the cages surrounding him shimmered. He bit back a frustrated cry and lay his head on his paws to think. When had his last test been? Two, perhaps three days ago. He wasn't sure, as the passing of days was marked only by the lessening of the whirs of machines as the whitecoats turned things off for the night. Either way, there would be time enough before his next test.
Max stood up slowly, padded to the door of his cage. He hesitated, trying to remember Yun's advice.
Don't push your luck. That's what gets you killed. If they forget to lock you in, don't try getting others out while you're at it. Just get out, stretch your legs, then go back and pretend you were never gone. And do not try to escape without a plan, and another backup plan or two.
"Of course." Max said in a breath, hushed and personal. It was the response he always had to Yun's words. "Of course."
He was lucky. The lock wasn't fully engaged - he unlocked it with some difficulty, and by the time he was out his tail was curled with anxiety and his ears were pinned back as he made his way down the counter onto the floor. He almost didn't look back as he scampered across the room towards the door. But as things would happen, he glanced back, and stopped. There was a creature in another cage, watching him intently. Perhaps it would speak. He paused, waiting for words he knew would come.
