Cardboard paced in his cage, around in endless circles. His eyes were empty, unfocused, as he walked. Suddenly, the top of his prison opened, and in came a gloved hand. Cardboard watched in horror as it started to grope for him, and he ran to the back of his cage. The hand felt around, and then a hideous face appeared from the top of the cage. It was a whitecoat. The hand closed over Cardboard, and he squealed in pure terror as he was lifted out from the cage and pressed against a cold, hard table. The whitecoat took out a syringe from his pocket, and thrust it into Cardboard's neck. He cried out in agony, and then passed out.

~Lady~
It had been a while since Lady had seen another. It may have been a few minutes or even many years for all Lady knew, time seemed fluid to her. This prison had kept her from the contact of others, it had deprived her of the love and attention she craved, it had driven her mad from the lonliness, it had . . .
That didn't matter now. Nothing mattered now. She certainly didn't matter, what mattered was that there was a lump that had been set in the corner of her cage.
One side of her thoughts forced out an urgent whisper,"Kill it! Rip it to shreds! It is nothing but a nightmare!"
"No, don't kill it, Lady! It is real and you know." The second side whispered. Lady approached the lump and followed the plea of the second voice, hoping it was right.
She shoved it and hoped it would wake.

Cardboard opened his eyes, seeing two other rats in the other cage. There was a bandage wrapped around his neck, and a strange cone around his head. He shook, trying to get it off, but failing.

~Lady~
"Lady sees a new rat! Kill- No no no Lady wants to make a friend! Lady has had no victu- no no company! Lady has had no company in a. . . . A long time." She said and eyed the rat.
The rat had a tight looking head trap and a few bandages on him. Lady couldn't tell how he felt, she could not remember facial emotions of others.
"You are who?" she asked and inched closer to him.
